We manage a diverse range of habitats across county Durham, many of the plant species we come across have a special relationship with the rocks on which they grow. Have you ever wondered why our county has such a diverse ecological and geological landscape? Get to grips with the building blocks of Durham, as we unlock the mysteries of the rocks on which we stand every day.’ We will completed the day with a visit to Blackhall Rocks to view the magnesian limestone cliffs and the geological treasures locked away within them.

]]>Today's task involved woodland management, as Rainton Meadows was landscaped and replanted with trees after it was an open cast coal mine over fifteen years ago. The plantations need to be thinned of diseased or damaged trees, so leaving the healthiest trees room to grow. This also allows more light to enter the woodlands to encourage growth of ground flora.
